Allotments are great spaces for healthy living and sustainable and organic growing. They can assist in helping to keep people fit and healthy, both physically and mentally and they can be great places for community activity, sharing and learning new skills.
Judges are looking for:
- Good quality crops, fruit and flowers which are free from disease, pests and damage
- A broad range of food crops and flowers should be in evidence with the available growing space taken into account.
- A plot in good overall condition with unplanted areas where crops have been harvested being weed free.
- Good overall soil cultivation.
- Evidence of good workmanship with well-maintained paths neatly edged.
- Intelligent use and sturdiness of plant supports where appropriate.
- Shed, greenhouses and other structures in good condition.
- Evidence of environmentally friendly practices including composting, rainwater collection and organic methods of growing.
- Originality of layout and planting including innovative adaptation of the plot layout to suit the plot holder’s needs, use of companion planting, overall visual effect, cultivation of less common plants and use of no-dig or deep bed methods will all be given credit where evident.
